Book Free ConsultationLighting in Indian homes must do more than just look good — it needs to work during frequent power cuts, survive voltage fluctuations, and fit into rooms where a ceiling fan often dominates the centre.
The Three Lighting Layers
Every well-lit room uses three layers. Start here before picking a single fixture. Always put ambient and at least one task light on the inverter line. Accent lights can be on the normal line and switched off during power cuts to save backup power.

| Layer | What It Does | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Ambient (General) | Fills the entire room with base light | Ceiling lights, cove lighting, large LED panels |
| Task | Bright, shadow-free light for reading, cooking, studying, shaving | Study lamp, under-cabinet kitchen light, mirror light, bedside reading light |
| Accent | Draws attention to art, pooja idols, textured walls; adds depth | Picture lights, backlit panels, niche spotlights, LED strips behind TV/headboard |
Choose the Right Bulb / Light Source
Bulbs affect your electricity bill, heat output, and how colours appear in the room.

| Bulb Type | Wattage (for 900–1200 lumens) | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| LED (Standard B22/E27) | 9–12W | All rooms, the only choice now |
| LED Panel (Square/Round) | 12–18W | Ceiling ambient in false ceiling |
| LED Strip (5050 chip) | 5–14W per metre | Cove, backlight, under-cabinet |
| CFL (Compact Fluorescent) | 15–20W | Outdated — replace with LED |
| Incandescent / Halogen | 60–100W | Avoid entirely — heat and bill |
Pick the Perfect Colour Temperature
The "warmth" or "coolness" of light changes a room's mood completely.

| Colour Temperature | Light Appearance | Best Room / Area |
|---|---|---|
| Warm White | Soft yellow-golden glow | Bedrooms, living rooms, pooja rooms, foyers |
| Warm Daylight / Natural White | Crisp white, neither yellow nor blue | Kitchens, bathrooms, study tables, dressing mirrors |
| Cool Daylight | Bluish-white, harsh | Rarely for homes — garages, utility, outdoor security |
Ceiling Light & Fan Coordination
In most Indian rooms, a ceiling fan occupies the exact centre. A hanging pendant or chandelier may clash. Here's how to manage.

| Ceiling Type | Fan Position | Best Ambient Light Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No false ceiling, fan in centre | Central fan | Flush-mount LED panel or semi-flush ceiling light offset to one side, or 4-corner recessed downlights if false ceiling |
| False ceiling (gypsum) with fan cut-out | Fan drops below false ceiling | Recessed LED downlights (4–6) arranged symmetrically around fan |
| No fan (AC room) | – | Central pendant, chandelier, or cove + recessed combo |
| High ceiling (10 ft+) | Fan rod extended | Pendant or chandelier can coexist; fan on long rod |

Lighting Design Checklist
- Plan the three layers — ambient, task, accent — for every room before buying a single light.
- Choose bulbs: All LED, 3000K warm white for living/bedrooms, 4000K for kitchen/bathroom.
- Design around the fan: Use recessed downlights or cove in false ceiling, offset pendants in AC rooms.
- Wire an inverter line: Essential ambient and one task light per room go on inverter backup.
- Add task lights: Under-cabinet in kitchen, swing-arm sconces by bed, mirror side-lights in bathroom.
- Use accent lights: LED strip behind TV and headboard, spotlight on pooja idols, picture light on art.
- Control intelligently: Dimmer in living/bedroom, motion sensor in foyer and wardrobe.
- Test before painting: Finalise light positions, cut false ceiling holes, then paint — not the other way around.
