Material & Finish Selection — Carcass Materials
Monsoon humidity, termites, and heat demand robust materials. The body and shutters can use different materials for cost optimization. Indian carpenter's rule: Use BWP plywood for the carcass — it resists wall seepage better than MDF. For shutters, 18mm BWP ply or MDF with good edge banding.

| Protection Method | What It Does | How to Use |
|---|---|---|
| BWP Ply Carcass | Base material resists swelling | Non-negotiable in humid zones |
| Edge Banding (2mm PVC) | Seals all ply edges from moisture | Insist with carpenter; inspect every edge |
| Neem Leaves / Cloves (Sachets) | Natural insect repellent | Place in corners, change every 3 months |
| Cedar Wood Blocks / Strips | Repels moths and silverfish | Stick a small block in saree and woolen section |
| Silica Gel / Moisture Absorber | Keeps humidity inside low | Place in loft and drawers during monsoon |
| Moth Balls (Naphthalene) — use sparingly | Strong moth protection | Only in sealed blanket boxes; keep away from silk |
| Muslin / Cotton Bags for Silk Sarees | Prevents zari tarnish, breathable | Store each silk saree in a separate muslin bag |
| Wardrobe Ventilation Slots / Wire Mesh | Airflow prevents musty smell | Small vents at back or bottom, covered with fine mesh |
Indian Wardrobe Decision Checklist
- Measure your room and decide: built-in or freestanding, hinged or sliding.
- Pick a style that matches your bed and overall room mood.
- Material: BWP ply (Greenply/CenturyPly); shutter finish — matte laminate or PU as per taste.
- Plan internal zones: long hanging (saree/lehenga, min 5.5 ft rod), short hanging (shirts/kurtas), shelves for folded items, drawers for small items, and a large loft.
- Depth check: Ensure at least 18 inches internal depth; 22–24 inches overall depth.
- Hardware: Soft-close hinges, smooth runners, and good handles or push-to-open.
- Add lighting: A motion-sensor LED strip inside for easy visibility.
- Protect: Edge-band everything, use neem/cedar sachets, muslin bags for silk.
